Salt Lake City to Bend.OR

We are heading to Bend August/September wondering if anyone has taken a route other than I84. Any recommendations for campgrounds along the way and at Bend?

We've taken Nevada 95. It's a very nice highway for RVers.

Thanks for responding. How long was the drive and where did you stay along the way to Bend?

We did it the other way last fall. Took US-20 from Bend to I-84 in Caldwell, ID, then I-84 into SLC. It was all good road but a lonely drive across the eastern OR desert. While we saw Bend as just another city, we stayed in and loved Sisters.

We've taken 95 multiple times but actually have driven every paved road in Nevada and we boondock on public lands so can't help with a RV park. Having been full-timers for 16 years we've explored every part of the states over the years.

I don't know which way you're traveling from Salt Lake City but the major towns have RV parks. Just figure out the miles you want to drive; pick a town and check RVParksReview.com for the RV parks. There's also Great Basin Nat'l Park at Baker on 6/50 and their campground is nice. Just west is an awesome rest area - Sacramento Pass - especially for RVer's - no hookups but gorgeous views.

Thanks Big Dude. We've done I84 and it can put you to sleep. The's why we're asking for alternate routes.

Two Gypsies, do you remember how long the drive was from SLC to Bend? Where did you stay in Bend?

Big Dude's route of I-84 to Hwy 20 at Ontario, Idaho is 655 miles. This is probably the route you've taken previously.

If you take I-80 west out of Salt Lake City into Nevada and north on 95 to 78 into Burns, Oregon then west on 20 to Bend, it's 700 miles.

I can't tell you how many hours. You need to figure your driving speed and stops.

We've never taken the interstate through Nevada. We've always come from different areas and took secondary roads through. From Salt Lake City you'd begin on an interstate.

We stayed at a national forest campground just out of Sisters on 20 heading to Eugene, OR, not right in Bend.

For Bend camping you might want to make a separate post or do a search. Also use RVParksReview.com for campgrounds in the area.

Thanks Two Gypsies. I'll try that route. It sounds like a good ride.

All I know is that Bend only has two RV parks and the cheap one is Scandia at $46/53 dollars a night or Crown Villa at $53/67 dollars a night.

There are two Oregon State Parks close to Bend, Tumalo State Park which is about 10 miles west of Bend, but it is sold out for almost every night this summer and La Pine State Recreation Area which is about 25 miles south of Bend.

La Pine State Rec seems to have several sites available for any night, we just stayed there 2 weeks ago and no reservation.

The State parks are $23 to $26 a night.
