San Antonio to Destin

In next 24-48 hours , taking I-10 unless someone else can suggest another route. what would be the best time of day to go through Houston? what should we be aware of..lots of lane changes? rough roads? Are the roads poor in LA? Any input is greatly appreciated. 40 ft with toad

I-10 is the direct route with the highest speed limit (I assume you will bypass New Orleans and take I-12 from I-10 in Baton Rouge to I-10 in Slidell, this saves a couple of hours of drive time). As to the best time to cross through Houston, my vote is in the mornings on the weekend, preferably on Sunday morning, but that is probably not an option for you. During the week Houston is a mess during the daylight hours, it is just more of a mess during certain hours of the day. If you take the I-610 loop to avoid downtown Houston on I-10, the south side tends to be easier to get around than the north. If you have E-Z pass you might consider Beltway 8 / Sam Houston Tollway, I would probably pick Beltway 8 North, but I am not sure about those giant overpasses that go above everything else on beltway 8, also I think the lanes are narrower vs I-10 / 610.

p.s. when you get to Lake Charles, LA take the I-210 bypass around, the I-210 bridge is much wider and less steep than the old I-10 bridge

San Antonio thru Houston OUTCOME

Tuesday, going I-10 all the way, we arrived just east of Houston right at 11:40. It wasn't worth all the stress leading up to the drive. Going through Houston had a # of lane changes and exits to other parts of the city, but thanks to the those signs painted on the ground I-10 East etc) of which lane you needed to be in, is in my opinion, the best thing since sliced bread! What a great idea! All we needed to do is use our Garmin and focus on the signs to stay on the I-10 eastbound. The traffic wasn't bad even at lunch hour. The worst traffic we were in was going south from Bodega Bay towards Pismo Beach, CA. The San Francisco -Oakland traffic was 10x sores and we went through on a Sunday a.m.

So thank you for responding to our request, Isaac-1!
