Not finding camp grounds in good SAMs book around the metropolitan area.

John and Susan,
Not a lot of options close to the city of San Francisco. If you could specify what direction from San Francisco your friends live we could probably give you a couple recommendations. Most are going to be South towards San Jose, East past Oakland, or north towards wine country. There is great public transportation in San Francisco and most people park/camp outside the city and commute into the city via public transportation. You might also ask your friends who live in the area for a recommendation.
Hope this helps.

Look into the Napa Valley Expo RV park and you can enjoy the vineyards along with the city. Drive your car to the north side of the bay and take the Larkspur ferry into the city. We made arrangement to take a small van all-day tour of the city and the van met us when we got off the ferry. It gave us ample time to see the main sites, walk through the Japanese Garden, cross the Golden Gate and had lunch in Sausalito. Even our daughter who lives there said it was a terrific tour with a small group.

Candlestick RV Park, San Francisco
We've stayed there about 10 times. Nice park.

It is quite an RV desert out here. Good RV space is very hard to find.
If you are going to City proper, Candlestick is probably your best bet. East Bay, I would suggest Pleasanton (Alameda County) Fairgrounds. South Bay - there are some options in Morgan Hill/Gilroy. As someone has already posted, North of San Francisco, your best bet is probably Napa.
Be prepared to pay. In the East Bay (where I currently park) small RV sites are getting close to kilobuck a month. And they are filled - housing is a real premium right now. Most of the what I would call traditional RV parks are full of long termers (such as myself).

We've thought about staying in those two places, in fact we did, but the cost of driving into San Francisco made it worthwhile to stay in Candlestick.
Traffic is a problem and there are tolls on the bridge.
Years ago there was a large RV park downtown across from where the baseball field is now. It was great, park your rig and catch all the buses that came right to the campground.
Ah yes, the good old days.

We stayed at the Alameda County fairgrounds in Pleasanton when touring Oakland - nice museums, presidential yacht. It is not fancy, but reasonable.
Best bet for SFO, stay at KOA in Petaluma. Take the KOA's bus tour or (better) go to Sausalito and take the ferry across. Stay as long as you want and return on the ferry.

Check out SF RV Resort in Pacifica. It is not much more than a large parking lot, but it is on the water and on a MUNI line. You can buy various passes, 1,3 or 7day length for unlimited rides on public transportation, except cable cars. They also have a passport option that includes the cable cars and various amusement options. Highly recommend some variety of pass regardless of where you stay. Take Bart or the Ferry into the city and use public transportation. Traffic is bad in the city and parking can cost you an arm and leg.
