Saranac Lake

Best route between Saranac Lake, NY and Bar Harbor, Maine. Planning this trip for the summer. We have 40ft Class A with toad. TIA

That depends on how you want to drive. Any way you go you have to get around Lake Champlain.
Lake George to Rutland VT to White River JCT, south on 89, south on 93, 101 to 95 to Bangor then 1A to Bar Harbor. Lots of highway.

Route 2 is a nicer ride all the way to Newport ME, 95 to Bangor, then 1A. This is my route of choice.

I guess that was my big concern. Do you need to drive around lake champlain? Wasn't sure if I could ferry across.

Thanks
Rick

We Workamp in the Lake George area and would suggest taking 73 from Saranac/Lake Placid to I-87 South (Adirondack Northway) to Exit 20. From Exit 20 go North a mile or so (past the Lake George Outlet Malls), then turn right on NY-149 to Fort Ann, then NY-22 North a few miles to Whitehall and turn East on US-4. US-4 takes you all the way to Portsmouth, NH where you can catch I-95 North and 3 hours to Bangor. We traveled on US-4 from Portsmouth to Lake George in Spring of 2012. Nice scenic route and we enjoyed it. We wrote about our route at Best RV Route loop through New Enland via NY - CT - RI - MA - NH - ME - VT. There are also 2 ferries, and a bridge across Lake Champlain at different points that you could cross with a motorhome to take a more Northerly route.

Forgot that, here is the link.

I looked into that once but was too cheap to ride across. I know my rig at the time was not a problem ( 25' 5th wheel with a short bed pickup )

Take the Plattsburg to Grand Isle trip - will take you right out to Roue 2, if you decide on that route. That ferry carries dozens of 18 wheelers every day.
