I have convinced the DW that North America has other great destinations other than the National parks out west. In June 2012 I want to travel from S. Louisiana to Michigan's U.P. over to Ottawa then towards Maine's coast.
One concern I have is locating a decent stop over between Sault Ste. Marie and Ottawa.
So the questions are: Is Hwy 17 a good road and are there any decent places to stop for the night between these two cities?
Any recomendations are welcomed!
Thanks

It has been some time since I drove that route. At that time I found the section from North Bay to Renfrew a little rough. There are a number of campgrounds to stay at. I have stayed at the KOA in the Sault and it is all right, The former KOA at Serpent River is good, and the Municipal Campground in Ottawa is good.

When you go to the Soo, stay at the city campground which is two miles to the east. The Aune Osborne park is right on the river where the frieghters make a tight turn coming and going from the locks. Really neat to see. The park has electric and water at each site plus full bathroom, laundry, showers. Go see the ANTLER'S cafe. Good food and neat things to see.
Enjoy your trip east through Canada. Have done it. Go see the Trent Severn canal system, especially the lift lock. Beatiful area.

Bay Mills Casino is good stop in Michigan just before crossing at the Soo in to Canada. Casino parking lot is free, they also have RV park with hookups we stayed in parking lot 2 times this year it is free, RV park was full, they charge for that. Nice trip, we are going to Nova Scotia for 2 weeks first of Sept. We will be starting in Ontario, have no idea about road condition from the Soo to Ottawa.

Hywy 17 is the Trans Canada Hwy thru Ontario and is as good a Highway as any, you should find Campgrounds in any good directory. You should be in the North Bay area if you go about half way between the two places.

Hey Folks
Thanks for all the good info! I'm just getting started so I'll be asking more question as I plan.

Are you on a tight schedule. Reason I ask is that when you get to Sudbury if you were to head south on Hwy 69 and then head across to Huntsville and take Hwy 60 to Ottawa way you will pass thru some of the most lake filled, wooded, area in the world. You would also pass thru Algonquin Park a huge Provincial Park with many campgrounds, hiking trails etc. with an interesting Visitor centre and my favorite campground called Lake of Two Rivers. Google it and read about it, just a suggestion if your not in a hurry, it would only add a day, to your trip

I would second the above. Just drove 60 from Huntsville to Renfrew and it is in good shape with not alot of traffic. Some good campgrounds around Huntsville.
