SLC to Wendover, NV on I-80

None of my programs show any CGs between SLC and Wendover, NV. Does anyone know of any or at least a place to stay overnight in I-80?

Hey Denny!

Have ya ever travelled that stretch of road? It has an interesting beauty in its own flat, salty, desolate way - but to stay overnight?? It's only about 100 miles from the western edges of the SLC area. Looks like there are some pull-offs, rest areas or truck weigh stations along the way, though.

I found it fascinating that it is flat as a tabletop and all you see are mountains way off in the distance yet I had a cell signal all the way without see a tower.

BTW, if you are going that way, and have time, try to see the huge Kennicot Copper Mine at Bingham Canyon SW of SLC near West Jordan. It is BIG. The husband of my wife's girlfriend was in the USAF as a C-130 loadmaster and his pilot once flew their plane around in circles inside the open pit mine!

We have stayed overnight a few times at the rest area right by the UT/NV line (on the eastbound side).

According to my AllStays Rest Area iphone app, there is also a rest area on the westbound side before Exit 4.

I've never been that way but next year we are going to the OR/NV border area to do some rockhounding and I was checking out possilbe places to stay overnight. Right now it looks like SLC (I'm starting out in SW CO), Wendover and then Winnemucca before going to our final destination in the desert somewhere. I have a choice of two hard days (for me) driving or three easy days and I'm pretty sure that I'll take the three day trip. That being the case, I'll try to see the mine as that sounds pretty interesting. Might even be able to find a nice rock or two!

We always end up staying overnight at the Salt Flats rest area.

On our trip across, we stopped and stayed at the KOA in West Wendover and liked it. Convenient to the Casino Restuarnts.

Once you pass exit 99 leaving SLC there is nothing till you get to the rest areas near Wendover. You could maybe boondock at one of the exits to the salt plants but there is almost a 100 mile stretch without any services. There is a small rv park at exit 99 but I wouldn't recommend it. I would stay at KOA or Pony Express in SLC or go to Wendover.
If you do have time the mine is quite a site if you have never seen it. I work at Kennecott so I am tired of seeing it. But dont plan on taking any rocks unless you get something at the gift shop. It is a $5 entrance fee to come to the visitors center and they do have bus and rv parking. Be prepared for up to 10% grades on the access road though.
