Smoky Mtn Route 441

From Gatlinburg, TN heading south through the Smokies to Cherokee, NC. Can a 39' Fifth Wheel make it through on Rt. 441? Then from there heading through Franklin, NC to Clayton, GA

Hopefully some others will chime in here but I will tell you ...DO NOT even consider state Rt. 28 in N.C. as a possible route from Cherokee to Franklin. It is an absolutely beautiful drive through there on a motorcycle, but there are many, many extremely tight turns that you will most likely not make it through. Lots of them that you would have to be completely across the double yellow line in order to set up for the turn.....and then you might still not make it. My wife and i were coming through there last summer on or motorcycles and the southbound lane was closed because of a 5ver couldn't make the turn and the trailer was teetering on the edge and almost ready to tip over and go down in the gully.

Iíd head over to 40 then 74 to Dillsboro. From there you can head up to Cherokee on 441. Then back down to Franklin and Ga. Itís about 35 miles longer but only 20 minutes slower. Look at the switchbacks on 441 from Gatlinburg. Theyíre severe.

Took 441 in my 45 foot Class A, no issues at all, just rolled on last year. Went from NC to Gatlinburg.

Done 441 through the GSMNP many times. No problems. There is so much traffic, you will not be the slowest vehicle on the road.
