So Illinois to Seattle

Planning a trip (our first), to Seattle from So Illinois via So Ca (Pomona). We have all summer retired/fulltime, but would like to be thru the southern part if the trip before too much heat. After Seattle heading back to Florida. Any input/wisdom from this forum of knowledge would be much appreciated. Looking at I57 to I55 to I30, short stop at relatives in Austin, then I10 to I15. Then 395 to Reno then 395 to Susanville, then 44 & 89 to I5 at Shasta and in to Seattle. Thoughts??

Your route sounds good and so glad you're taking 395. It's a beauty! Your worst part will be from Ausintin via 1-10 to I-15 in California - very boring unless you get off the interstate sometimes. Unfortunately, you're not going to miss the heat. It has started big time in the deserts. You'll have heat until you get on 395 heading north. Have a good trip!

If time is not of the essence, I would skip the Shasta north I-5 part and get over to Brookings Ore and travel up the Oregon coast. The hwy is right over the ocean with a bunch of really cool small coast towns along the way.
I-5 north is just I-5 north.

I totally agree with Tman59...101 along the coast is beautiful. You will find it may take longer than anticipated, only because there are more "Kodak moments" than you can count.

Thanks for suggestions guys. We've decided to split the trip. So Cal on 395 to Susanville, then switch to 101.

Mike, While I agree that 101 is a very scenic it is also very slow and curvy.

The section from Susanville to Shasta on 44 and 89 is thru National Forests and also very scenic. Good road although 44 has some construction at least 2 weeks ago when we drove it N. Although there were not many or long delays. All 55 MPH the same it is on the interstates in CA with better road than the interstate at least the southern part.
