Would appreciate input on traveling south from the mid-Atlantic region to Savannah, GA. Any advice on traveling down Intersate 13 through MD and DE and crossing over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel into VA and then along the coast on I-17 - Avoiding I-95 is what we would like to do. Is this route advisable or way to slow? We are traveling in a B+ Holdiay Rambler Augusta 25 footer. Just seems like a nice route (from the maps) and much more scenic - avoiding lots of toll and all the traffic and big rigs on I-95.

That's the best way to go south slowly!

Coming through Myrtle Beach don't forget to cast out your anchor for a few days and take in some of our wintertime activities especially the "Nights of a Thousand Candles" at the Brookgreen Gardens.

When we went full time 4 years ago we left frigid RI and exited I-95 in NC. We picked up 17 and took that south, great drive. Stopped in New Bern, NC, then a month in Myrtle Beach for the holidays. Continued on to Charleston before reaching Savannah. We driven it again since, it is a great way to head south. Georgia has some great state park campgrounds, 20% off for seniors 62+ from any state. We have stayed in Ft McAllister in Richmond Hill GA twice and Skidaway Island once. Both have nice CG's.

Bob we stay away from GA state parks. We stayed at Fort McAllister in the spring of 2010 and the "no seeum" bugs will carry you away. We had reservations for about 6 wks and told them we had a 38' rig. When we get there we find out that they do not assign campsites!!! We drove around the CG for an hour, all the sites that a big rig could get into had a tent or pop-up in then. We finally did find one that we could bend the rig around some trees, no awning and one slide stayed in. No more GA state parks for me.

Pete & Linda,

I would not let one bad experience with a GA park stop you from visiting others. Some of them have very nice golf courses and GA gives seniors 62+ a 20% discount. Being full time we like the fact that they do not assign sites as we can arrive mid-week and pick a nice level site. Human nature says that people will pick the biggest site they can find, even if in a popup

Bob big problem if in season and no site for you to fit in even though you have a reservation. I will stay away. The SC State Parks website gives you a description of the site AND a picture of the site and they assign sites.

No advice on traveling. but if you travel with doggies. then as I understand in Savanah there is a Pet Smart across the street from a Star Bucks.

You take the pooches there for a shampoo and trim.. Ask for Amy when you make the appointment. Do it before Christmas or after Jan-1 though. not inbetween.. She'll be out of state between.
