St Louis to Rend Lake

We are currently at Badler State Park, west of St Louis. We are heading to South Marcum at Rend lake next. What is the best route? How bad is it driving through St Louis on I64?

Thanks.

I assume you are coming into St Loius from west on 70? We go on 70 to 370 then 270(which cross miss river north of 70) then 255 south to I 64. This keep you north of down town and has less traffic.

You could stay on I 70, staying north of St.Louis, all the way to I57, then to exit 77 ....that is the best exit at Rend Lake.

It may be the short distance but not the easiest drive! I 70 is very busy down by arch and stadium.

We are just off of I64 in Chesterfield. What about taking I270 south, then going back north on I255 to get back to I64?

If we take I70 we would be going quite a way north from where we are now.

Yes that would be perfect. I did not know you we're south of 70.

Since no one answered the question about the "traffic problems" if you take I 64 all the way through, I would just bite the bullet and do just that. How bad could it be?. The extra time and fuel doing those "bypass' routes may not be worth it. I would wait for the morning rush hour to end, . Have fun at Rend lake. It is a wonderful place. I stay at the COE called "gun club", just off exit 77, past a golf coarse, and i have stayed at Sandusky South, another COE.

We are heading out in the morning. We drove our car to the arch, and the freeway through downtown looked like it could be manageable in good traffic. However, from Babler State park it looks like it might be easier to take I44 over to I270. Any thoughts on that route?

If you take 44 and 55 north you can cross the poplar st. bridge and pick up 64 to 57. That 's the shortest route however the bridge is really rough. Also be alert for construction exiting I-64 to I-57 in Mount Vernon we didn't get over soon enough and had to exit.

We just got back on Monday. We had a great 3 week trip. We started at Babler State Park in St Louis, then on to Rend Lake for a week. From there we stayed at Redman Park on Lake Wappapello in southern Mo for a few days. Our trip home took us through Hannibal and Iowa City, before returning to the Twin Cities.

The route advice out of St Louis was helpful. We ended up taking I44 out of Babler, then I270/I255 to get back to I64. We retraced our route coming back from Wappapello on I270 to I64. If I had to do it again, that is the route I would have followed to get out of Babler.

The total trip was 1500 miles, towing a car. We got incredible mileage going through the flat lands of Iowa with a tail wind. Our top mileage was 10.5/mpg. We dropped down to 6 in the hilly parts of southern Mo.

Thanks for the comeback. Your route takes in a lot of our beautiful states of Il. , Mo. and Iowa. Hannibal is a quaint city, lovers leap, Mark Twain....did you know Rend lake is man made.?? We have relatives in Defiance, Mo. Stayed at Babler. No easy route to get there. Not many bridges over the Missouri,, all bottomlands... Glad you had a good time.

Did you get to go to the "home of throwed rolls", in Sykeston, Mo.??

I know Im way behind on this but just joined so please forgive bringing up an old discussion.

Lamberts in Sikeston. Throwed rolls. A classic!

I am from St Louis before moving to Chattanooga and now Alabama.

Did you go into the Arch? It gives me the willies.

I noted original poster from the Twin Cities. A few years ago we took a boat from just south of downtown St Louis all the way to the end of the navigational channel of the Mississippi, just north of Minneapolis.
We went through all 27 Locks & Dams.... twice. I think the entire trip was 1400 miles round trip, we did it easily in two weeks. It was fun, but I much prefer the land-based RV.
