Summer Vacation - Phoenix,Ventura,San Francisco,Fort Bragg, Etna

Big trip planned for this summer. Starting out in Phoenix (Gilbert), AZ. Will leave after work and head to the CA border for the night (about a 3 hour trip). Then try and get through LA and make it to somewhere between Ventura and Santa Barbara (lots of good sites there - just need to get lucky at Rincon Parkway if possible - one of my favorite). Then we will head up the 101 to San Francisco for a couple of days. Try and see Alcatraz, Pier 39 and the Golden Gate Bridge. Then we will head up the 1 to Fort Bragg and stay the night. Then up to Eureka and head over the 299 to Redding and on up to Yreka and then over the mountain to my Mom's in Etna, CA. I have done a few versions of that trip in the past. Should be a good trip with the family. Will just reverse it as we see fit on the way home.

Have you ever traveled on 395 to San Francisco? It's an awesome drive with beautiful campgrounds. It avoids all the LA traffic.

Can you give me a hint? Are you talking about the 395 from around Victorville up to Lake Tahoe and beyond (that route would have me go up to 8000+ feet)? If so, no I have not, and I like taking the coast trips as much as possible. I would usually take the 1 all the way up, but we have done that a few times in the past few years and are looking to get up north before getting on the 1 this year.
