Tenn to Lake Tahoe KOA route suggestions

Hi,

We are looking at workamping at the Lake Tahoe KOA next year and wanted to get some suggestions how to get there. We are driving a 36 foot Journey with a Honda CRV in tow. We will need to be there April 1st and want to avoid snow as much as possible.

We are thinking the southern route of I-40 and turn up to Vegas and then Hwy 95 up to Tahoe but I don't know anything about 95 except what google map shows.

Does anyone in the area or familiar with getting to Tahoe know if that will work or a better route?

Thanks!
Ben

OK just saw another route to take I-40 to Hwy 395 right past Barstow then up to Tahoe from there. Would this be OK for a 36 foot motorhome?

Thanks
Ben

I would not take the 95 out of Las Vegas. The second route you describe would not be a problem provided the weather cooperates. You should have no problem we travel the 395 all the time in our MH. You will have a couple significant grades, the Sherwin grade out of Bishop to the Sherwin Summit is about 28 miles, then you have the Conway grade out of the Mono Lake area to the Conway summit, which is only about 5 miles but a fairly steep grade. There are some other minor grades along the route but nothing to worry about. When going into Tahoe off the 395, take highway 50 up to the Lake, do not take the Kingsbury Grade. The 395 is a great drive with many scenic areas and places to stop along the way. It is generally two lanes in each direction, once you get past Ridgecrest area. The snow should pretty much be gone by that time of year, but you do need to pay attention to the weather should they get some late snow storms.

Hi Mike - Thanks for the information! We have some fairly decent grades here in the Smokies but probably nothing like you have out west!

I can't help with the route, but I can't think of a better place to work camp than the Tahoe area.
