Texas Tags Renewable For Three Years

I just got home from renewing my 2008 Bounder tags. When renewing the lady asked me if I wanted to renew for three years. I have lived in Texas most of my life and had never heard of this. Is this new? I asked her if this applied to all vehicles and she said yes it does. She said we have a choice of 1, 2 or 3 years. She is a new hire and did not know when this started. It does not save us any money but it is nice to have the option. I renewed my motorhome tags for 3 years for $9, DV tags.

I had never heard of it either until today.
I found this on the DMV site.
From the DMV Motor Vehicle Registration Manual chapter 14-13 dated Aptil 2010
Multiyear Registration
Every vehicle classification that displays multi-year license plates is eligible to
register for a 12, 24, or 36-month registration period.

The clerk was new, but don't think she made a mistake. I over heard the clerk next to her explaining the multi year registraion to another customer.

You better check this out - no one at the court house in Harris county has heard of this. Post if you know something we do not. Thanks C Lacy

Now why is this not a surprise. They won't hire anyone with an IQ over 50.

The following quote came from Registration and Title Bulletin - #019-11 which references the software application, "Registration and Title System (RTS) Version 6.7.0", that County Tax Assessor-Collectors use when registering vehicles in the State of Texas. The IVTRS is used by those that are registering a vehicle online... so it looks like you can register for 12, 24, or 36 months.

"MULTI-YEAR REGISTRATION
With this release, Multi-Year Registration will be available for most new and used vehicle types and customers will have the option of paying registration fees for 12, 24 or 36 months at time of title transfer or registration renewal. Customers will also have the option to renew online, through IVTRS, for 12, 24 or 36 months in participating counties."

I just renewed for 24, not 36 online. Didn't want to spend $1200, but will probably wish in the 3rd year that I had.

TXiceMan - you are too funny. Correct, but funny.

Well, if no one in Texas DMV can get Class A, B, and C licenses correct, who would expect that the clerks office would have MultiYear registrations knowledge.
