Just doing a little planning and was wondering from those of you who have been.....after visiting the UP of Michigan, would you recommend coming down the east (Lake Huron side) or west (Lake Michigan side) of the Michigan mainland on your way south. Aesthetics are important as are things to see/do and ease of travel. We are a motor home pulling a toad.
Thanks a bunch up front.

donna, i really think you would enjoy the west side the most. don't get me wrong, all of northern michigan is great, we live on the east side on lake huron and love it but when we take off for a cruise in the mh we gravitate to the west side. two towns you would want to stop at would be the petoskey area. a real nice koa and two other high enders, hearthside grove on the north side of petoskey and a signature resort on the south end. then south of that would be traverse city. stop and stay at traverse bay rv resort. you won't be sorry for that stop! lots of sightseeing in the toad in both places and wow! the restuarants. have fun and safe travels.

Donna B: Yup, we agree with Jim (beaverjim), and like the West side of the mitten best. Also, spend a few days around Traverse City and take a day trip with your toad up the Leelanau Peninsula and back down the coast on Rt. #22. Poke around the shops, have lunch, and visit Sleeping Bear Dunes Natl. Park. It'll be a great day. Steve & Lynette

We also want to visit the UP....passed thru there in 1989 coming home from a Canadian trip and thought it was pretty. We like to avoid crowds so do most of our travel before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. Would right after Labor Day be a good time to go?

I agree with everyone else We live on East side, i think there is more to see & do on the West side of the State.

Since you are full-timers, why not, instead of returning South through MI, continue West through the UP then follow the coast South. There are many really neat State and (1)National Parks along the coast. This National Park is not for drivers, one must be willing to hike and kayak/canoe, to see the wonderful sights. If you're into touring lighthouses, you're in heaven, I forget how many there are along the coastal route.
