The tunnel is short, and aside from the sharp curve at the western portal not a problem for we RV types.

The state of Alabama has a plan in the works to replace the tunnel with a suspension bridge. There is lots of community opposition as the towers will dwarf the buildings downtown and the bridge itself may affect the fledgling cruise industry in Mobile. We may or may not see a bridge ten years from now.

But the tunnel is running over capacity and needs to be replaced with something.

A bit of movie trivia...the tunnel has a brief starring role in an early Steven Spielberg movie that was filmed in part in the Mobile area. Anyone know the name of the movie? (I do!)

Apparently the I-95 tunnel is RV friendly, but not the US98, Bankhead Tunnel, in Mobile. Check out the following link to read the story.

Steve

PS: The movie was "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." Richard Dreyfus drives through the tunnel while chasing UFOs. The tunnel, called the George Wallace Tunnel, was also used in the movie "Stone Cold" with Brian Bosworth.

Correct, Steve!

The UFO scenes at Devil's Tower were also shot in Mobile at the former Brookley Air Force Base. One of the hangars there was converted to a sound stage for the alien landing at the end of the movie.

But I don't think any of the I-95 tunnels in Alabama are friendly to RVs, because there aren't any! The I-10 tunnel however...

By the way, that mistake is made more times than I can count. People confuse I-10 and I-95 all the time when they ask for directions around here.

Wow, I can't imagine I made that mistake. I'm in Savannah right now visiting friends so I guess 95 is on my mind.

Steve

PS: Thanks for the info about the filming, I wondered where those landing scenes were filmed.

I was not even aware there was a tunnel in Mobile and we will be heading to Topsail from Texas this fall. Thanks to everyone for the vids. Looks like the tunnel is pretty much a non-event.
