we are headed to Howe IND. then to Niagara falls in a few days with our 38rssa mobile suite. was wondering if any one had road info on I80 . we understand there are tolls on I80. any one know how much it costs pulling a 40' fifth wheel and a ram dually?? is there a easy way around it?

If you use Google and search for Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio toll road info, and the New York Thruway (I-90) you can find the information. It will cost a bunch. An alternate route would be to drop down to US 30 (Lincoln Highway) or, once past Illinois use US 6. Either one will be slower than the toll roads but more scenic and give you a feel for the region.

You might also check out E-Z pass info, it makes things faster and a little cheaper on all the toll roads you'll be using.

The I-90 toll is around $11 to go from the NY-PA border to the non-toll portion around Buffalo. Have done it many times and in fact we are currently in that area. Depending on where you are staying near Niagara Falls, you may need to cross the Grand Island bridges which is another small toll. I think it is $2 when towing a trailer, $1 for just a car.

I would stay off I-80 through IL as it gets crazy. You can drop south at Grand Island,NE to HWY 6 then east to I 29 then north to HWY 34 then east until it turns into to HWY 24 continue east until you hit HWY 30 then east until you can work northeast. Good road through Iowa,IL and IN without killer traffic.Good travels!!!

The IRT - cost us $$ to shake the. x-! out of us. Sections have been repaved. But where it isn't the expansion joints in the condition of it for what it cost us to go from one end of the state to the other absolutely ridiculous.

The only IRT I know of is the Interborough Rapid Transit Company, a subway system in NYC. If you were driving on tracks, it explains the rough ride.

The "I" could refer to Illinois, or Indiana, both of which have toll roads on I-80. You'll have to be more specific.

I wouldn't recommend taking side roads like Rt 30 around Chicago, get an I-Pass & that will save you some money.
I'm sitting in the campground at Hollywood Casino in Joliet which is a couple of blocks from I-80 & it's before the tollway begins, if you stop here you could go to a Jewel Food store & buy an I-Pass.

Maybe something like this - https://binged.it/2wSP9zV

We have driven this a number of times in our Coach and enjoyed it - Toll Free.

Also allows you to see a little of Colorado, and fewer trucks than I 80.

JMHO,

Couple of short side roads - https://binged.it/2wVRrON

Slide into Moab and drive RT 128 along the Colorado River - you will enjoy I NEVER miss this drive.

Then slide off at Minturn just before Vail on RT 24 - going by Red Cliff and through Camp Hale and Leadville before returning just West of Breck.

Last is an exit just past Idaho Springs left hand side that will allow you to Follow Clear Creek into Golden. Another Drive I Never Miss.

These are drives that we always try to take as they just allow/expose you to the Beauty that is right along the way.

Then out of Golden on RT 58 to I-70 - avoid rush hour - then I 70 East to Exit 45 taking you over to RT 36 avoiding the I's till Hannibal, MO - Good roads - little traffic - few trucks - easy/relaxing drive.

I will always do everything in my power to avoid Chicago - and anything close - the local roads are good two lane farm roads - keep an eye out for a horse and buggy along this section.

Best of Luck,
