hometool,

Being in Phila., it will add miles to get to I-81. If you can leave early on a Sunday morning, I-95 is possible thru the Balt. - Wash. area without too much hassle. I will go this route if I can clear DC before noon. I-695 must be used around Balt. for an LP restricted tunnel on I-95 on the east side of Balt.

If you are not in a hurry, another possible route is U.S. 13 down thru Del., Md. and Va., crossing the Bay Bridge/Tunnel to Norfolk, then U.S. 58 to I-95. The tunnel/bridge is a toll.

Or, Come down 95, around Baltimore on their beltway to I-97s, to 301s, down through So. Md. to 207 in Va. which will run back into I-95 well south of D.C.

We do it every year. I-81 from Harrisburg to FL. 81 is superior over 95. Drove it for years to Virginia Beach and I avoid it like the plague! From Hbg., 81 is the same distance to FL. You would have the miles from Philly to Hbg, not much difference. We leave 1/5 planning to arrive in Keys 1/8. Good Luck, see you on the highway.

Also consider taking 81 to 64 which will get you onto 95 in Richmond Va. I've taken this route between western Pa and Fl numerous times unless I want to go to Charlotte NC in which case I stay on 81 to 77. I only go through DC between 10pm and 5am with no traffic hassles unless they decide to do night-time highway construction road closures ... been there and done that too.
