Traveling in CA
What is the best route to take with a 36 ft fifth wheel from the LA area to Santa Cruz?

That depends on what you mean by "best." I-5 is easy, has services all the way - and boring...then you cut over thru Gilroy. 101 is pretty and goes right into Santa Cruz, but has less services along the way.
I would avoid the Pacific Coast Hwy, AKA Hwy 1 with the RV, but it can be done.
I have done all 3...it all depends on what you are looking for.

There is no shortage of services on 101 but not many of the big truck stop kind of stations. The campgrounds are prettier and more pleasant and plentiful IMHO. The road is good and you avoid the Grapevine and the grades from Los Banos over to the coast. You will pull one big grade outside of Paso Robles, the Cuesta grade, but that is about it. We prefer 101 when we head that way.

LA to SC
101 to 129
129 to 1
1 to Santa Cruz
Around 50 miles more than taking 5, but a much more relaxing drive.
Better scenery too.

101 all the way, easy , plenty of Services, not a problem for any size RV

101?
101 does NOT go to Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is roughly where Hwy 17 and 1 meet.
There are lots of ways to get from 101 to Santa Cruz, but IMHO 129 is the best route for someone pulling a big fifth wheel.

101 goes right to the general area is all I was saying, as everyone was talking which Freeway to take. And you said it too " there are lots of ways to get to Santa Cruz"

I'm glad somebody else said it...I was thinking the same thing.
The last 20 or so miles West of 101 are well marked and quite easy to negotiate...& 129 is a good route.
Haven't heard back from the OP, so for all anyone knows, they are gonna try the PCH. I followed a Prevost Coach on Hwy1 once...and the driver was not aware of or did not care about the California law requiring a driver to pull over to let traffic pass once there are a bunch (5, I think) vehicles behind them.
