We are preparing to full time in about six months and wish to slow our lives down, smell the roses and see the country. Although there are many books out there about routes to take etc., can we please get some feed back on any good literature for traveling without the interstate hustle. We don't want to buy a library to get two good books. Thank you all in advance.

There is a ton of info out there without having to buy books. Check out some of the links from various states, tourist type of web sites, etc. I use this one quite a bit, although there are some others. Depending on the size of your RV, you may want to purchase a directory on "truck routes" just to make sure you meet weight and height standards of certain roads. Good luck

We travel us highways instead of interstates and use Good Sam trip routing. Check it out on their site.

Man, if I didn't have to be someplace and no timetable I would buy and atlas and just wing it. Thats what my dad used in the 60's instead of using the interstate if possible. I remember seeing sites from WA to PA and sleeping where we could. We left after school let out and return in August. Best trip of my life. Get rid of the technology and explore.

I've seen some mighty fine scenery on the interstates. Just because it's an interstate doesn't mean it's not pretty.
Google maps is an excellent way to pick routes and you can use the satellite view to clear up any questions you may have on how a campground looks before you get there.

I threw my GPS away and got a new road atlas.

If you already have a smartphone, they will always give you good instructions. If not, a good road atlas is the way to go.

Another way to do it is....Set a goal of seeing something around the U.S.

We decided to visit all the Presidential Museums and in the process we saw a lot of the country while we were going to the various states.

We've now been to all of them, some more than once, and there is one opening soon in Texas so we'll be headed that way next year.

We've met people who have seen a major league ball game in every major ball park around the country. Some people go to all the national parks. You get the point.

We also like to travel the secondary highways and just use the Wal Mart atlas. The secondary highways in the WM atlas are red, so I know that is a good 2 lane road that an 18 wheeler can travel on. The interstates are blue and the 4 lanes highways are orange. We have dumb phones and use Chiquita, our gps only occasionally.
