Trip advice needed for Alpine, TX to Carlsbad, NM

Hello!
We are leaving Alpine, TX and are avoiding some of the bad highways like 285 to go to see the Carlsbad/Roswell area in NM. Someone from NM recommended a route that would avoid the highways that are in bad shape but we need to figure out a good road from Alpine to, say, I10. We are thinking 118 to Fort Davis (which we know is good, we've driven our Jeep there), then at Fort Davis take 17 up to I10. In addition, we would like to take 17 from balmorhea on I10 to Pecos on I20.

An alternative route might be 67 if 17 is unacceptable. We are in a 43 foot Dutch Star with toad.

Okay, took 17 north from Fort Davis and then to Pecos no problem. But, when we went north on 115 to Kermit on our way to Hobbs, there was about three miles of completely removed road with gravel. This construction didn't show up on google maps so I missed it in planning our route.
