Trip planning from Petoskey, Michigan to Montreal, Ontario in September

Looking at two routes, going north to Sault Ste Marie and then east on trans Canada hwy 17 or going southeast through Michigan and entering Canada at port Huron and taking Canada 402 to 401 to Montreal. Primary purpose of the trip is to see fall colors. From Montreal we plan on going to Quebec City and then to Acadia national park.

Any advice on which of these two routes is best would be greatly appreciated. If another route is better than these two that would be welcome as well.

Don't know about fall colors, but Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) or 401/2 is a great road. I drove it from Port Huron to Niagara Falls, Ontario and back to Port Huron in June of this year. It is much better than most of the US roads I traveled. The road is free. There is a charge at Port Huron to get across the bridge. Caution: the lanes for RVs at the border are narrow/tight both ways.

FYI, Montreal is in Quebec, not Ontario...

Sault Ste. Marie route much more scenic, but 17 is not 4 lane.

Regardless of the route, you should plan a stop at Ottawa. It is a wonderful place to visit. Lovely and full of things to see. Some other nice nice stopping points in Ontario are Kingston and Niagara-on-the-Lake (not the same as Niagara Falls which is also a great stop if you haven't been there.
