we need to be in las vegas in middle of march. any suggestions for what route to take driving a allegro 33 ft, no toad yet.

I did it 2 spring breaks ago. I took I5. When I got to Shasta I took a hwy 89 i think to Reno, thought it would save time then head south to LV. 89 was so slow and snow covered...about 1hr into the drive I was forced to turn around and take the full ride down i5 far enough south to i15 as to not have an issue. From portland like 1150 miles plus the 80 mile mistake. It truly was awful when I thought it would be 1000. I was driving my new motorhome on its shake down trip so that was fun. On the way back chains were required over Shasta and they were checking you had then om the way back a week later. This was March 25 2011.

Can't speak to the best route coming down from Washington, but can recommend taking your time and enjoying the trip. We just did the Las Wages jaunt from Colorado in February and went direct across the mountains going and meandered among the scenery in AZ and NM coming home. Enjoyed every minute of it (even the snow on the orange trees south of Tuscan)

The easy route, I-5 to Bakersfield, CA then 58 to Barstow, then I-15 to Vegas.

I'd suggest you not travel I-5 in southern Oregon or Northern California this afternoon or tomorrow (Mar 5 & 6). Up to 18 inches of snow predicted for mountain passes according to Medford TV weather forecasts. Chains and or road closures would be expected.

How would you put chains on an RV? Sounds ominous!!

Not sure where you are coming from. If you are west of the Cascades, you might want to get on the east side of the Cascades and stay there. I-84 is a good way over them. I have gone from Portland to LV in the winter along I-84 to Twin Falls ID, south on US 97 (I think). This comes into I-15 just north of LV. It was chilly but the roads were good and free of ice/snow.

Another possibility is down through Bend and Klameth Falls OR, down to Reno, then continue south on US 95. This cuts out most of the high country where ice/snow could be a problem.

Whichever way you go, stay on the main roads and check the weather before hand.
