U.S. Highway 64 Taos to Cimarron in April

Heading back north in early April we are looking at taking US Hwy 64 from Taos to Cimarron. Most of it is over 7,000 feet elevation with one 9,100 foot pass. Is this route to be avoided with a 25 foot motorhome pulling a small toad? Are April snows the norm through there? Thanks for any help.

Did this route with a car years ago. Will do it in our motorhome in May. Do not foresee any problems. It is a beautiful drive. NM Vietnam War memorial in Eagle. Anywhere around this area will involve some climbing and some hills, but that is part of the territory. It is a good road.

I did it the other way with a 30 ft class A with motorcycle trailer

From Taos it's uphill but you shouldn't have any problems with the road with your small motorhome. I'd recommend to get a road condition/weather report just before you get on it for added confidence.

If I remember correctly, the section where you turn east to Cimarron is quite twisty and narrow--you will have to pay attention. However, have your co-pilot have a camera ready, you might just see a black bear. It is all-together a beautiful drive.
