US 50 in Nevada

When we depart Lake Havasu, AZ next spring...likely late April...we're planning to head north on US95 thru Vegas en route to traverse US 50 in Nevada between Dayton (or maybe start at Fernley or Fallon...TBD) and Ely. Looks like an interesting drive along the Pony Express Trail. We'll be in a 39' gas class A towing a Jeep Liberty.

I'd like to hear from others who have recently traveled US 50 who might like to share the road conditions...good pavement or not; the climbs and descents; weather that time of year; recommendations on parks and campgrounds, etc. We're experienced RVers (31-seasons) but this will be our first time along this road. Any tips, advice, cautions, etc. will be appreciated.

Between Carson City and Lake Tahoe, steep but good road, lots of twists and turns .... From Lake Tahoe to Sacramento downhill and fairly straight, easy drive ..... As for road conditions, most nevada and California roads are pretty good but it has been a few years since last traveled .....

If you take 89 out of Tahoe to Truckee it is beautiful but there are some narrow spots, challenging drive be careful.

It's called one of the loneliest roads in America for a reason. Between Dayton and Austin Nevada it is a some what narrow road and the only gas station in between burned down a few years ago. May be one now but ? Went through there a few years ago coming down from Montana heading to Lake Tahoe.

Not sure where you are going after that but the only pass likely open over the Sierra Nevada that time of the year is 88, 80 or 50. The others, Ebbetts pass, Sonora Pass and Tioga Pass into Yosemite are usually closed. You are too big to go over Sonora or Ebbetts. These are around 10,000 feet and very narrow road is the reason why. They opened up in June this year, was a heavy snow pack.

If you stay east of the Sierra Nevada I like to take Hwy 395. Tomorrow I am actually going 50 to Tahoe and down 395 and back over Tioga pass through Yosemite. Tioga pass got snow last night and was closed but should re open by Tuesday or before when I come back to central Ca. It is snowing as we speak in Tahoe so hope it is gone by the morning, I plan to camp there.

we'd be heading east out of Ely so i was figuring to continue on US 50/US 6 to I-15 and then onto I-70. what will i be up against doing that?

I would be more concerned about US 95 thru Las Vegas. From Lake Havasu it's not too bad once you get past Laughlin, 4 lane now. They are working on the new Interstate 11 as you approach Boulder City/ Railroad pass interchange. Then you have traffic and construction until you get north of Vegas. Recommend Traveling that section early morning (before 5am) weekdays or before 10am weekends. Seventy five miles north 95 changes to a two lane road most of the way to Dayton. US 50 is two lane hill and valley thru Austin, Eureka and into Ely. Fuel as needed but remember no services between towns. When you reach Ely Us 50 runs into and shares US 93 and US 6. It will take you thru downtown Ely. You can go north or south. You will make a right turn and follow 93 south. Many fuel stops before going out of town including a Loves. You will pass the Junction of US 6/50 going to Tonopah. Yes you drove thru Tonopah going up US 95. Just south of town They have A KOA on the right that I would recommend. You will also pass fast food and grocery stores. When you leave Ely You will be going south on US 93/50/6. You will pass thru a small mountain range before Us 93 turns off to the right. You will now be on US6/50 east. You will see a wind mill farm on the left on your way to Delta Utah. Some hills thru Sacramento pass. (6600 feet) Next stop Great National park. If you have time I highly recommend stopping and taking the tour of Lehman caves. Most campgrounds are still closed in April. The town of Baker 5 miles from the park has a small RV park. (Whispering Elms) Not much there but hey any port in a storm. From Baker you can go to Delta or Cedar City Utah. All mountain passes should be clear unless a major storm has just gone thru. Ok I can go on and on. PM me if I can give you more info. Happy travels.

The 50

We are leaving Ft. Collins tomorrow and taking the 14 to the 40 to the 6 to the 50 to get to Reno/Carson City.

We are in a 32' Win Vista with no toad. This is leg 2 of our first big trip in a class A.

Any tips on this route would be appreciated.

I've been doing 50 from no cal to Moab for years. Between Fallon and Ely there are several passes to cross, but nothing your rig couldn't handle. It's a 2 lane road and is in good shape. Rarely see a pothole. There's gas stations in Eureka and Austin. Not much else for services. On the downside, if something breaks, there could be a long wait for assistance. With that said, cell service (ATT) is pretty good these days. If you travel east of Ely on 50, it's more of the same, but fewer passes.

"The Loneliest Road" was created as an advertising stunt to get more tourists! it worked! Good road, lots of places to explore along it. Stop and get the "passport" before driving it - get verification stamps in the various towns along the way, get a "certificate" when done! Fun!

Morning rk911, We are in Arco Idaho and will depart this Thursday for Ely and points West on US-50.
If you go to the You Tube link below there are a number of videos on 50, 3 months to a few years old.

https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...y=us+50+ely+nv

We will probably take 2 to 4 days, plan to explore a few sites if able. I want to see the Rail Museum in Ely, I also like Ghost and Mining Towns. Ghost as Abandoned Not Haunted. The Rail museum is sponsoring a Haunted Train this month, go to their web site for dates, cost about $39.00 per Soul.

50 is in good condition as stated, stay topped off and enjoy. 70 and 15 Interstates in Utah are in good condition. 70 had snow but was almost gone as of last Monday when we came through. We were going to take US-50 from Utah to Ely and points West, but I saw a Tennis Ball, didn't catch it until we hit Arco...
Hope You Have A Great Trip...

We drove 50 from Fallon to I-15 in august. We loved it. The west side, Fallon to Austin, is very lonely. No gas stations, no food, etc. The east side did not seem to be as deserted. We stayed in ely at the KOA and liked it. We ate supper at the Prospector Hotel and Casino. It was great. East of Ely to I-15 is more of the same. There are some passes, but nothing that is severe enough to require special planning. Carry some emergency supplies and go for it.

Rk911, we are starting our 2nd day on 50. We came out of Arco Idaho 3 days ago on US-93.
Yesterday at a rest stop north of Ely was a Pony Express Trail Marker. Very interesting. Rest Stip allows stays no longer than 18 hrs. We spent our day at the Train Museum, White Pine Museum, ran into a guy named Jim who was a Wealth of Historical Information, he had placed a fair number of the Lincoln Highway Markers that Line 50. And talked about the abundance of Ghost Towns/Mining Camps, which is what brought him here years ago to retire.
Anyway, day temps are great, very comfortable, nights have been in the low to mid 20s. Where we are about 10 miles west of town on BLM land, actual temp is 36 weather site says the low will be 19. It's so beautiful this morning, few clouds and a ton of stars. Oh and we have verison 3 bars of 4G.
If you don't send for info from Nevada Tourism, be sure to stop in Carson City.
