We will be traveling with 40' motorhome towing from Iowa to Arizona soon and would like to know about driving US54 from Wichita, KS to Tucumcari, NM as opposed to going on south on I 35 to I 40 then west.
It is about 100 miles shorter on US 54 if that is a good road to take.
Any comments would be appreciated

Do you have a real reason to go thru Wichita? If not, at Emporia Ks, do not get on the pike, but stay on US 50. A little ways past Hutchinson take a left on K-61. This will put you on US 54, just east of Pratt KS. This is my preferred route pulling a 53 ft trailer, or running fat...

Been a long time, but from what I remember, the first 20-25 miles after the OP would get off toll road where the normal pain of big city traffic. OTOH, the 50-61-54 avoids all tolls and cities.
