We are considering taking US 54 from Wichita, KS to Tucumcari, NM in order to save some distance on our trip to Tucson, AZ. Has any driven US 54? If so, how does it flow? Is there much stop and go? What is the availability of diesel fuel services?
Thanks.
Canuck

Canuck,

I would reccommend that way. We drove that route in 2005 and found it to be a nice shortcut between I-35 & I-40. For the most part it is two-lane and goes through small towns with lower speed limits but not many traffic lights, as I recall. Fuel was no problem as most small towns have a gas station. Seems like most folks (farmers/ranchers) out that way have a diesel P/U so you know the stations will have diesel pumps. Many stations were easily accessible just off the roadway in the small towns.

FWIW - we stayed in a nice, convienient CG in Dalhart, TX called The Corral RV Park. Wide, flat gravel sites - some shaded - with FHU.

No problem on US 54 with diesel it is used by a lot of trucks as a short cut.

54 is a truckers road and moves at a good pace. At Santa Rosa I'll jump back on 54 to Alamogordo and then take 70 to Las Cruces. I have had no problems with 54. Go ahead on run it.

Thanks to all who responded. We'll definitely take this route on our return trip in the spring.
