US 63 in Arkansas
How is US 63 coming off of I-55 just North of Memphis? We are looking at another trip (in car this time) for a wedding in Holiday Island, AR. US 63 will connect to US 62 which is a nice road. I may want to use this route later for a trip in Daisy to Bull Shoals. Are there any steep mountains in that area?
Also I read somewhere on these forums about people avoiding Memphis. Is there a reason for that?

Memphis is like any other large city, in that I try to avoid driving at rush hour (I live here and thankfully have that luxury). The biggest thing I've noticed driving my DP around here (leaving/returning/service) is the general lack of turn signals and folks that think something 40ft long should be able to stop on a dime. Then again, I'm not sure that's really any different from anywhere else. If you're crossing the MS river, I'd suggest using the I40 bridge which is newer and slightly wider than the I55 bridge.
Sorry I can't help with US 63 info. I55 was horrible, great, horrible, great.... Drove it from the MO state line to the I40 junction toward TN on our trip home 7/22. There were 5 mile patches of "newly" paved road followed by 5-10 mile patches that should have been paved. Looked like they had no plan whatsoever in what got paved and what didn't .

Not sure about U.S. 63, but Memphis has had a lot of construction on I 55 for the past few years. With all the fast lane changes required to remain on 55 it is a challenge for big rigs in heavy traffic. Earlier in the year, most of the construction was finished, but the lane changing keeps you busy. We don't even consider avoiding the city, as it is just not worth it. Some good barbecue there!

I got a first hand experience with I-55 rough roads last week going South from Jackson.

Live outside Memphis, drive in town each day75-100+ miles, 46ft truck+ trailer, no problems, good signs, plenty of time to change lanes, do drive fast + crazy , much easier drive that Nashville,St Louis, Little Rock. I would avoid Beale St . Elbow to elbow, Dirty, over rated, over priced, NO parking, walk blocks, Cops everywhere, that tells you something!

Once you get off I-55 your good up to the Walnut Ridge area. It's almost flat except for the area around Jonesboro. Once you get onto US-412 and west of the Black River you will get hills.

My rig handled a 7% going to the Buffalo River very good. Being it was my first one I was concerned. If there is nothing bigger than that I will be good to go.

We have traveled from Memphis to Mountain Home, Arkansas at least once per year from Florida for several years. Memphis is a pain but as mentioned, don't try to drive it during rush hour. I 40 is a better route through but our route takes us through via I 55. Just take it easy and you'll be ok.
We have no problems on US 63. Some of the road is 2 lane and the road has hills--not mountains. We have driven it in a 36 ft gasser and a 38 ft DP no problems with either. Just don't be in a hurry and you'll be ok. There are passing lanes on the 2 lane section.
Enjoy the drive.
