US Highway 199 (Red Woods Highway)

Will be in Brookings. Or and interested if anyone has taken Highway 199 from Crescent, CA over to catch Interstate 5 North. Traveling in a Class A pulling a toad and wandering what the highway is like for traveling. Thanks in advance for your help. Love this site!

199 is a nice road, lots of RV traffic. A little curvy but not near as bad as say hwy 20 from 101 to the coast or hwy 1 coming up the coast below Monterrey.

I live about four miles north of the OR-CA border off 199. To me it is a good road but there are a few 20 or 25 mph curves. Also the guard rails are often close to the fog lines so if driving on narrow roads makes you uncomfortable that could be an issure. 199 is good enough that interstate truckers use it if/when I-5 is closed in the wiinter. If you have time stop at the Great Cats of the World at the south edge of Cave Junction. (There are two Cat parks right next to each other and the better (I think) is the one closer to Cave Junction.

We drove 199 once from Redding over to Eureka and it took forever and that was in our mini van. It's not dangerous or anything, it's just a long way. Count on taking your time and by that I mean, slow.

Did this route a couple of years ago in a 40' motorhome pulling an SUV. Narrow in many spots and fairly heavily traveled by truckers. There are a couple of spots in the narrow gorge where the cliff is on one side and the River on the other that you must watch your lane. Ok except when passing trucks.

Just take your time. It's a beautiful drive through the Redwoods.

I think Redding to Eureka is 299, no?

Just did that drive a couple of months ago. From Grants Pass to Crescent City. Beautiful drive.

Oops, you are correct. Another reason not to log on late at night...
