US50 thru Nevada

I am wondering about taking US50 across Nevada to Carson City after leaving the Moab, Utah area? I am a little reluctant after seeing the highway labeled “The Loneliest Highway in America”! Any advice?

I’ve been traveling that route for the last 15 years. Other than the section that shares I-70, (its 4 lane interstate) its a fine 2 lane road in great shape. There’s a few passes to climb and descend but they shouldn’t be any trouble for you. Several of the towns have fuel you can get to in your DS. I had to come home through Salt Lake last year and hated it. Boring!

We towed our 5th wheel over that route from Carson City to I-70 a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. Stopped overnight in Ely to view the copper mine and ride the train and at Baker to drive up Wheeler Peak in Great Basin NP. Both stops were worth the extra nights on the road.

And the road is not as "lonely" as advertised as there are plenty of gas stations in the small towns. Just expect to pay a lot for fuel.

Definitely more scenic than I-80!

Thanks everybody, I’ll be planing my fuel fill ups and making tracks on US 50. I didn’t like the I-80 route on a previous trip by car, so y’all have convinced me to go for it. When my DW ask me “What we’re you thinking” I’ll refer her to this forum

Agree... it's a beautiful drive and it's not that lonely anymore. It's been discovered!

I drive it pretty regularly. If you want to experiance the lonely part, drive it at midnight in a winter snowstorm.

I want no part of that scenario.

I would fill up at Ely, Eureka, Skip Austin (too expensive), then Fallon. Stop off at Middle Gate for a burger.

Drove this route back from Colorado to Oregon this past summer and you have no issues to worry about. we always take this route as it is interesting. Be aware that there are open range cattle along the highway and no fences. Gets kind of exciting when you realize you just passed a 1000 beef going 65+ mph. Fuel - both gas and diesel are available.
