Utah Route 12 from US89 east to Torrey
There were some old posts about traveling on Utah 12 - how beautiful it was - was it doable in an RV - ect. The other day we decided to take it after leaving Glendale, UT (base camp for Zion and Bryce) from US89 to go to the Arches National Park and Moab. We are driving a 32' Class C with a Ford V10 engine, flat towing a Chevy HHR. Here are the notes I made: There were about 5 downgrades of 8% and 10% - most with curves, some sharp curves. There were at least 3 uphill grades of 6-8 %, some with S curves - up to an altitude of 9600 ft. Some of the road was rough, with construction in other areas. Many of the up and down grades had 25-30mph speed suggestion signs, and I would strongly advise you to heed them!
There was little traffic, which was nice, some pretty scenery, but even though hubby took it nice and easy, I was a nervous wreck when we reached Torrey. Our initial plan was to then take UT route 24 east through Capital Reef N.P and Hankville up to I-70, but I decided that might be too much, so we took a long route on 24 WEST to I-70. The irony is that the part of I-70 that we ended up seeing with my "detour" was prettier than anything we saw on UT12!
My advice is to take US89 to I-70 and east from there. BE AWARE, though that between Salina and Green River there is NO GAS or services! I hope this helps others facing this decision. Everyone has their own comfort level, and we are relative flatlanders living in east TN and coming from FL, so others might not find this a bad route at all.

opinions are like noses we all have one.
12 is one of the most beautiful drives in the west. (just my opinion)
i have never heard it being called a freeway, it is a scenic highway that you take your time and enjoy.
sorry you didn't enjoy it but that means one less rv on it next time i go out of my way to enjoy it.
