Like most, I hate I-95 and will do most anything reasonable to avoid it. My 'alternate' route from where I live in VA to Orlando is to take I-85 from Greensboro down to about Commerce, GA, use 129 to avoid Atlanta, and pick up I-75 down to FL. This adds about 130 miles to a more 'direct' route which puts me on I-95 near Florence, SC.

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Hi smlranger,
To miss Atlanta, try Rt 441 South at I85 exit 149. Take Rt 441 South to Eatonton, GA. Pick up Rt 129 South at Eatonton. Continue on Rt 129 South and pick up I75 at Macon, Ga.

Is the juice worth the squeeze? That depends on your trip requirements. The 130 miles is not an extra 2 hours. It is more like 3 to 4 hours. Georgia Rt 441 and 129 are scenic, through small towns. Rt 29 is the same. This means reduced speed limits, stop and go through the small towns. If you need to boogy down the road the answer is no. If you have the time and don't mind the above mentioned items, then go for it.

This route is like taking Rt 50 across Southern Kansas. It was okay for the first 100 miles, then, for me, it got irritating (however the wife enjoyed the ride through the small towns). I was thankfull to pick up the interstate system again.

Have you considered the highway that was there before I-95 - US 301? Mileage is not too much more since it is a parallel route and a lot of it is four lane.

I85 south from Greensboro to I77 south to Columbia, SC
Hwy 321 south to Hwy 301 south to Orlando, FL
Mostly 4 lane but some 2 lane. Nice drive and interesting country. It keeps you off I95 for sure.
