VA to San Antonio, best route?

We are finalizing our thinking/planning for our first trip to the SW US in winter... Jan, Feb, Mar. We will leave Virginia right after Christmas and likely head to Myrtle Beach or maybe Hilton Head for a week or so. Then we have considered two possible options to get to the San Antonio/Hill Country area of TX..... head south to I-10 and then west or maybe get on I-20 and head west to that part of TX.

So looking for suggestions/advice on either route.

I would avoid I-10 which involves Baton Rouge and Houston drivers and delays. Use I 20 and US 80 to go across the southeast. We use a great park, Shallow Creek RV, just off I-20 at Gladewater TX as a first stop from our home near Austin. From there you have a good day's drive to San Antonio taking TX 155 thru Tyler to Palestine, then US 79 until it hits the TX130 Tollway at Hutto. The tollway bypasses Austin and gets you down to SAT at 80 mph limit! Good roads and fuel pricing once you hit TX. With a bit of research you can find stops that have pure diesel, no French fry bio added.

Thanks for the tips. We do want to avoid driving thru the cities whenever possible.

It looks like we will be not far behind you. We are also leaving about the same time for the great SW from Lynchburg, VA. It's our first big multi-month trip. Good Luck. Hope to see you along the way.
