Visiting California and Taxes

We plan to vist California next winter. We own a house in Ohio and all of our cars/MH are registered there. I understand California is pursuing people for taxes.

Is there a time limit which CA uses to trigger the part time resident status? We asked a campground for a monthly rate quote and they said CA requires forms and a credit check. I don't want my retirement income to get taxed by overstaying our welcome.

As I recall 181 days triggers residence status, not sure what it is now.

That's correct.
A person can stay 180 consecutive days with no worries -- residency is established on the 181st day.

The following is from the California tax code:
G Guidelines for Determining Residency
The underlying theory of residency is that you are a resident of the place where you have the closest connections.
The following list shows some of the factors you can use to help determine your residency status. Since your residence is usually the place where you have the closest ties, you should compare your ties to California with your ties elsewhere. In using these factors, it is the strength of your ties, not just the number of ties, that determines your residency.
Factors to consider are as follows:
• Amount of time you spend in California versus amount of time you spend outside California.
• Location of your spouse/RDP and children.
• Location of your principal residence.
• State that issued your driver’s license.
• State where your vehicles are registered.
• State in which you maintain your professional licenses.
• State in which you are registered to vote.
• Location of the banks where you maintain accounts.
• The origination point of your financial transactions.
• Location of your medical professionals and other healthcare providers (doctors, dentists etc.), accountants, and attorneys.
• Location of your social ties, such as your place of worship, professional associations, or social and country clubs of which you are a member.
• Location of your real property and investments.
• Permanence of your work assignments in California.

I could find nothing about the number of days in California makes one a resident or not.

Under residency, Personal Income Tax of 1935. It is stated as in aggregate more than 6 months of a taxable year.

Thanks Gary! I had checked a CA gov tax site but couldn't find what you found, just what I was looking for. We do have our home and all else not in CA. This retiring is complicated and I didn't want to make a $$$$$$ misunderstanding.

I think I recall hearing staying longer then 6 months could be considered becoming a resident of Ca. At least that's a question on a Ca income tax form.

It also sounds like the CG you talked to was under the impression you wanted to move in there. We have never ever been asked for credit info. To pay for a month up front, yes. But no way, no how am I ever going to provide some clown at a CG my SSN. Talk about asking for trouble.

It is a mobile home park that takes RV's. The location is ideal for our purposes. We have not set up a towed, yet. I agree, which is what prompted the questions.

Some older parks that have had problems with squatters will ask for a credit check. I also have run into this and will always run the other direction if a CG asks this of me. I don't give out my social for anyone except Uncle Sam.
The last dental appointment I had wanted my social and I said you don't need it, I'm paying cash/CC. They said no problem.
