Later this summer, we will be travelling from Brewster, WA (north of Wenatchee) to Deer Park, WA (north of Spokane). The most direct route is to go through Spokane and up US 395 to Deer Park. But we've done that before and US 395 in Spokane is very heavy, stop and go traffic. It can easily take over 30 minutes to go less than 10 miles. So, we were looking at WA-20. It adds 40 miles to the trip, but we've never been that way and it's always nice to see new scenery. It looks like it would take us over some mountains and we're wondering what the road is like. Are these tall, steep graded passes? Winding mountain roads? Or is it a fairly gentle up and/or down hill grades? Anyone been that way care to comment? We drive a 41' long, 12.5' high diesel pusher and tow a car.

G'morning. We've driven WA Rt. 20 heading East through the Cascades and from Winthrop, Okanogon and East over to Kettle Falls, Colville and then on East to Sandpoint. (Didn't go S. from Colville to Deer Park). Entire route was VERY pleasant, and sure don't recall any dramatic up/down grades nor twisty mtn. roadway at all. Ya do some long, general climbing and descents, but nothing I think you'd have to be concerned about. Even Sherman Pass (btwn. Republic and Kettle Falls) is only 5,587 ft. It's beautiful country.

No problems and it's very scenic. We've driven 395 from Spokane a number of times with the Bus and towing and picked up WA-20 at Colville and followed it all the way to the road's end at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal. The only steep grade portion is Washington Pass and Rainy Pass, which is west of Mazama, but even those are no big deal. I know what you mean regarding US-395 leaving Spokane, it is kind of a yo-yo drive. We've also taken US-2 to Wilbur and then up to Grand Coulee. There's more hills and things around Grand Coulee than there are at Sherman Pass or Kettle Falls. If you are looking for something different, but not taxing, I'd go the way you are suggesting.

A lot depends on your comfort level. What may be no be deal to some of us may be terrible to others. I have been over most of 20 many years ago and the only thing I remember about it is it is all 2 lane.
