Walmart Etiquette

We are new to RV'ing. We bought our first MH about 6 weeks ago and have been using it on weekends in local campgrounds to get familiar with all the systems and set up. This past weekend we took our longest trip - 100 miles - each way and also towed our car for the first time. In a couple weeks we will be taking our first longer trip to KY to visit family. We plan to stop at a Walmart on the trips to and from. It will be our first time doing that. I have read the websites about Walmart camping etiquette. The one item I am not clear on is what time is it acceptable to arrive and park at a Walmart? Is 4:00 pm OK or do we need to plan to arrive later? Thanks.

Anytime is fine, but I always go in and ask for a manager and ask permission because some don't want rv's, that way I am always sure to tell management that we will be picking up a few things while we are there.

We have good friends that always stay at Camp Wally when on the road. They have never had a problem with it. They try to park either to the side or as far from the doors as possible. They did sAy that some wallmarts have designated rv areas.

Some GPS units have a Wal-Mart locator built into them (I have a Rand McNally 7710) It will give me info on the Wal Marts along my route and will tell you if staying there is or isn't permitted. Some will say contact manager. Some store do not allow MHs, but this is usually because of a town or county ordinance. If in doubt call ahead.

Look up Walmart "overnighting" on allstays.com.
They ask you to always get permission and you will
be informed as to what you are allowed or not.

Please do not become one of the many that feel we are
entitled to set up camp on private land.

Walmart has been a friend to RVers for many years but
they are closing one store after another to overnighting
due to people doing what they feel like.

Overnighting means being able to be one the road in minutes.
No slides, jacks, chairs, barbeques, etc.

We've stayed at WM perhaps a dozen times in the past two years. Its the convenience that's valuable. We typically would arrive about 4-5ish, and leave about 10AMish. We always call ahead to verify approval, then I always go into the store, spend some money, and personally look up the manager on duty to say thank you. They seem to appreciate it in a way that makes me think not many people bother to say thanks.

When using Walmart generally arrive at 8pm or later & leave 8 am or earlier. Generally buy something.

That's a first - Walmart & etiguette in the same sentence! I stayed at a Walmart in Woodburn Oregon last night. Arrived about 4 pm and there were four RV's and six semi tractors/trailers. During the night some trucks left and others came in. When I looked out windows about 6:30 AM two of the RV's had left but two others had came in during the night. Time wise I suspect you can arrive when you want and leave when you want (assuming you are not staying more than a night). That's just my opinion.

We have spent many a nights at a Walmart over 25 years of Rving. With the cameras and the one door open 24 hrs I sometimes feel safer there than other places. Only rarely have we been told not to stay overnight.
Yes we do spend $$ for groceries and are glad we know our cooked chicken is waiting!!!
We always park on the outside perimeter with our door facing the store.
Yes they come around with the big vacuum to clean the parking lot at 3 AM but that is the price we pay!!!
Happy travel
