Washington D. C. travel update

We just went thru the Baltimore-Washington area twice on I-95.

South of Washington from Quantico exit northbound to beltway was very slow going. We were southbound on a Wed. morning about 10 am., northbound backed up 5-6 miles.

Southbound backed up about 2 miles approaching Quantico area construction.

Last night (Sunday about 5 pm), situation was the same northbound.

I-95 northbound exit to Baltimore beltway (west bound towards Towson), is a single lane exit. Last night (now about 8 pm on Sunday), traffic was backed up about 3 miles. Most of this due to ignorant drivers who would not wait in line and think they have the privilege of jumping in at the head of the line.

All considered, we think we lost about 45-60 minutes to clear the mess northbound yesterday.

I do want to give a well done to VA. DOT. Message board south of Richmond advised I-295 bypass around Richmond was closed to all traffic northbound due to accident. We went thru on I-95. traffic was heavy but moved at a decent pace.

Thanks for the update. I will be towing through that area in a couple of weeks, probably on a Sunday.

That area is always a mess. I avoid it if at all possible.

I'll go so far as using Rt. 301 to bypass D.C. Hit some traffic lights, but I miss out on the kamakazi's on the D.C. beltway.

Used to live two miles off that mess and deal with it almost every day. It never gets any better. You could get a traffic jam, either way, at 2AM just as easily as during rush hours, and rush hours...well if you work 8 hour days, add 1.5 hours either side for your drive. If it can be avoided during the day, do it.

Headed South, usually I81 South to I77 to Columbia is a longer but much better alternative. JMHO

I appreciate all the info. It looks like we'll be heading into D.C. late on a Sunday morning a couple of weeks from now, coming in on 95 from Richmond to Greenbelt. Based on the comments here, I won't be expecting clear sailing but I will try to be patient - and careful.

Hello Ramets,

The wife and I do judge bbq competitions, hence the handle. We have judged a nice one in Huntsville, Ala. which is usually held in the beginning of May.

Poke around on kcbs.us for info on the organization that sanctions about 500 competitions in the USA and now going international. Just checked and I see there is a judging class near you on Jan. 17, 2015 in Hartselle, Alabama. If you become interested, contact Susan Hines at 256-773-4204 or susan@hartsellechamber.org
