Winter is a pretty wide period of time and no matter which route you chose you'll have to watch the weather and be prepared. One route not mentioned is heading southeast through Boise to Twin Falls and then US 93 to Las Vegas and beyond.

What are the best winter routes between Chicago and San Francisco? I know that I will have to choose my days (think warm spell) to actually get into and out of Chicago, but what are the best routes cross country once I am out? Do I have to go all the way south, or is there a mid continent route that gets south of most winter weather far enough to try? I don't winterize but my water bays are heated by my furnace.

The tests were actually done on the surface of lake superior in mid February. You can disagree all you want but I watched the tests and read the reports. Chains were actually funny o watch once the chained vehicle was not going in a straight line. It looked like to operators of the chained vehicles were trying to do doughnuts but in reality they were totally out of control. BTW these were all trained professional drivers with multi-vehicle tests done by the DOT involved and with the power of jurisdiction.
