Which route to take?

My wife and I will be traveling from Massachusetts to Verona, N.Y. to attend a Winnebago rally in Verona, N.Y. From there we want to head on out to Elkhart, In. It will be our longest trip to date and I was wondering if we should travel by way of Niagara Falls into Canada via Rt. 403 & 402 into Sarnia and then on down through Michigan and on to Indiana, or should we take the southerly Rt. via Rt. 90 through Cleveland an on to Elkhart.
The questions that I have are: Would it be a hassle getting our passports so we can travel through Canada? I would love to spend the night in a Canadian RV Park. ( any recommendations, please?) I would really love to experience the beautiful state of Michigan. This RV CG ideally would be near Sarnia, our half way point to Elkhart from N.Y.
Thank you so much for any input.

I would definitely take the Canadian route. We have made several trips from Missouri to London, Ontario area including one with the travel trailer. Definitely the Sarnia route (402 highway) is the preferred one and stay away from Detroit. If you don't have passports you will need them so apply now. Canada is a very clean looking country and easy driving at least from London to Sarnia and the Blue Waters Bridge port of entry is only a short delay if any at all. Just keep an eye out for all the garbage truck semis hauling Canadian trash into Michigan dump sites. Never could understand that. Our only campground was too far off the 402 to be of use to you but it did require advance reservations and was well worth the money.

We made that trip (sort of) in September 2012. Chose to head west from Niagara Falls and into Canada, then enter Michigan at Port Huron. Nice trip.

Passports are easy to get, just apply ahead in enough time to get them back (not sure if there is a backlog for processing them now like there was a few years ago).

We stayed at this pleasant RV park near St. Clair, MI. Easy on/off.

St Clair RV Campground | RV Camp in Michigan | Port Huron RV Resort

Have fun.

Good ole USA has some great scenery as well as Canada. Seems to me that you can do both on the same trip as there is no need to retrace. Unless you are not returning to Ma.

As an alternate to a full passport, you can get a passport card. This is only good for ground travel on this continent, but is about half the cost of a passport. We got ours through the local post office, and an appointment and application is necessary. I understand some states that border Canada will add the passport card authorization to your drivers license.

Thanks all for your responses. I believe we will get our passports and head to Michigan by way of Canada and stay at the St. Clair CG in Smirna which is our half way point, so that is convenient. Thanks for the tip on not purchasing a full blown passport but rather a continental one instead. I didn't know there was an option.
And yes, we will steer clear of Detroit!
