Whitefish Mt to Banff

We are going to visit Glacier National park this year and are looking at visiting Banff.
How is the road from Whitefish Mt to Banff in a 40' RV?
The other option is to travel from Helena to Calgary.
If someone is familiar with this route please advise.

MT 409 is not approved for semi's in the Rand McNally truckers road atlas. To me that means it may not be suitable for a 40' MH either.
Why not use I 15 instead?

You can go from Whitefish to Cranbrook, BC
head north to Golden, and head over to Banff.
Fantastic bridge to cross, and the highways are good.

If you go to Calgary and then over to Banff,
through to Lake Louise, north to the Columbia Icefields,
Jasper Park, back down the Yellowhead (#5),
stop at Clearwater, see the waterfall in Wells Gray,
you will have lots of memories.
The waterfall is four times taller than Niagra Falls, and
the road is good. I would suggest staying in Clearwater
and driving your toad. Lots to see.
