Why 101 Santa Barbara to San. Diego

Whats highway 101 like driving a 38' with a toad from Santa Barbara through LA to i5 south to San Diego on a Sunday?

If you must travel south on 101 on a Sunday, be prepared for heavy, heavy traffic. Any day would be better than Sunday for southbound travel due to all the weekenders who visit Ventura, Santa Barbara, Pismo Beach, etc. From LA south to San Diego on I-5 is rarely any better. FYI, motorhomes with a toad are illegal in the diamond lanes.

Thanks for quick reply. Other than the traffic volume is the 101 driveable with a RV and toad?

We are familiar with pch, living in OC all of our lives. Just got home, fron San francisco via pch, but we hook up with the 405 from Ventura on the way home. You can stay on pch but you will go through a lot of traffic lights from Huntington beach to Santa monica. If you want to see all the beach cities it's ok to go that way, but very time consuming. Of the cities you may want to drive pch, Carlsbad, solana, laguna beach is beautiful, Huntington beach, palos verdes, as you go north from that area you will have more traffic, especially near LAX. You'd be better off on the 405 fwy until Oxnard/ Ventura . On from there it's beautiful. It's 80* today!

I believe PCH is Highway 1, not 101. And, yes, other than a huge traffic volume, it is RV doable.

Raining today, but still not bad, 64*
Yes, I believe the 101 hwy becomes the 405 in some areas which is the freeway.
Best times to travel thru L.A:
Before 5:30 am
After 9:15 a.m., no later than 3:00pm
A lot less traffic after 7pm.
If we happen to make good time and arrive early to the L.A. area, close to around 6pm, we stop and eat a leisurely dinner in either Santa Clarita/Magic Mountain area from the north, and kill time until about 7:30 pm. Much better traffic flow after that. From the south, same situation, we stop in San Clemente for a long dinner or walk on the beach [there is a state park off of Califia Beach, where you are at the ocean, and we don't get back on to the freeway until 7:30pm.
Same goes from Laguna Beach, although I am not familiar with RV parking there.

The 101 and I405 never run together. They cross out near Van Nuys in the San Fernando Valley Then the 101 runs thru downtown L.A. and meets I5, I405 runs south on the west side of L.A. and past LAX to meet I5 near Tustin. I spent hundreds of hour commuting on those routes. I would avoid either the 101 or I405 on a workday except very early in the am or after 7pm.
