Winnipeg to Dawson Creek BC roads?

We are heading to Alaska in 2015
From our home Mapquest shows if we drove Winnipeg to Dawson Creek BC it would be a couple hundred miles shorter than north from Montana.

In Canada we have never had the MH west of Winnipeg so wondering about the roads.

Probably be a lot cheaper for fuel in the states. Canada is notorious for high fuel prices. 200 miles on the total length of the trip is pretty insignificant overall.

Yes, I paid as much as $6.20 a gallon for diesel in June and July in BC & YT.

Just looking at touring parts of Canada we have not been to before.

We have spent many vacations in Canada and fuel prices are not quite so scary when Imperial gallons are converted to US gallons.
1 Imperial gallon = 1.2 US gallons

We crossed out of Montana at Coutts/Sweetgrass, then straight north through Calgary. The road will be fine to Dawson Creek, B.C. unless there's construction. It'll be north of Dawson Creek that you might hit some road problems. It'll mainly be frost heaves, but they're well marked with flags on the side of the road to let you know where they are. Just slow down and you won't have a problem. Depending on what time of the year you go north, you could hit road construction. We went through Dawson Creek May 18th. Road work isn't usually done that early so we didn't have any problems with that. But we did hit a little snow out of Destruction Bay, Y.T. but nothing that mattered much. It will be an incredible trip for you. Just take your time and soak in all the beauty. Oh, one little bit of info. Make sure you keep the camera on the dashboard. If you haven't already, plan on getting the Milepost and Church's Alaska Camping books, and the Alaska discount coupon book that will pay for itself with one tour. Man, I'm trying my best to go back, but it looks like it won't be until 2016. I'm truely jealous!!!

Fuel hasn't been sold in gallons in Canada for 40+ years! it's sold in Litres, there 3.78 Litres in a US gallon.

Currently the fuel in western Canada is about $1.20 / litre, that's about $4.53 / US gallon.
