1/2 ton towable quality 5th wheel?

Sure the Hemi is a strong engine so we know it won't have any problems pulling the 7900 lb trailer .
The 1500 Ram has a 3900 RAWR which leaves around 1400-1500 lb payload in the bed for a very small payload.
Add the hitch and other gear and that in the bed payload drops to around 1100-1200 lbs for a 5th wheel trailer hitch weight. Now your left looking for a 5th wheel trailer in the 5k-7k GVWR range.
Simply put the the Hemi has the power but the trucks chassis simply doesn't have the capacity too carry pin weight for the size trailer your wanting.your wanting

You worded this very well. When said I bought a 24' 5th wheel and said I planned on towing it with my 1/2 ton ram almost all the replies said I need a 3/4 or 1 ton to pull it. When I bought the truck I knew I would be towing. (I was hoping it was going to be a 24' aluminum boat guessing around 9000lbs loaded) so I got the lower gears for more towing capabilities. Max towing 10050lbs.
My 5th wheel weighs 5400 lbs. I agree the RAWR is 3900. The pin weight is 600lbs (which concerns me some) I still am not close to over loading my truck. After rolling over the scales my GCWR is 11380lbs the truck is rated GCWR is 15500lbs.
So it is possible to tow a 5th wheel with a 1/2 ton, we don't have a king bed, slides, ac, microwave, or a tv in ours. We are perfectly ok with that. We are not full timing. It's for sleeping and rainy days. The adventure is outside the RV.
Ps I never got the boat [emoji22]

No way would I ever consider a 1/2 ton tv for any 5th wheel. Need at least 3/4 to 1 ton. Than you can start looking to fill your desires. My two cents----get the truck first, can never have to much truck. Than begin looking at travel trailers or 5th wheels. Again, the 5th wheel will tow as though it is not there. The travel trailer, I call a wiggle waggle, no matter how much you try to stabilize with weight distribution hitches, they will move about.

We have a 2017 Keystone Cougar 26SABWE TT with a king bed and it is 6500lbs dry. We love it and we were pulling it with a Ram 1500 with no problems. That model should fit you well.

Just to throw in my 2 cents. I have a Chev 2500HD diesel LTZ crew cab short box Z71 4x4. GVWR of 10,000 lbs. Seems like a lot doesn't it. Well once i dragged it across the scales with just me, the fifth wheel hitch and a full tank of diesel I realised I only had 1800 lbs left for pin weight, wife and two teen age kids and a beagle and baggage. So in reality closer to 1400 lbs left for the pin.
We purchased a Jayco Eagle HT 26.5BHS. Says it's half ton towable. Well once we loaded it up for just a two day trip and no water I was over my GVWR by about 300 pounds. Might be able to move stuff around to bring the pin weight down a bit but in reality it's not going to make much of a difference. I may have to look at a different truck.

I think I've given up. The truck is a fine deal, so no change there. Needed one for kayaks anyway. We may just hold onto the Newmar Class A for awhile.

I'm conservative when figuring out towing capacities and there are plenty of 1/2 ton towable fifth wheels.
There are also a lot of fifth wheels that say 1/2 ton towable that are not. One issue is 1/2 ton trucks themselves vary greatly in towing capacities so its kind of a broad term.

My two cents--I would not even look at a 5th wheel unless I had a 3/4 to 1 ton truck. You need the proper suspension and frame to handle the overall weight of a quality 5er.

Been researching fifth wheels I could potentially tow behind my 1500 Chevy Silverado - here's a list I came across of new half-ton towable fifth wheel trailers from a bunch of different brands that are under 8,000 lbs. After reading some of these responses, realizing I need to also check the pin weight.

Shadoman I am not against towing a 5th wheel with a 1/2 ton truck as I will be in the spring.
It looks like most of the 5th wheels in the article weigh between 7000 to 9000 lbs dry. By the time you load it up I would think you would pushing the limits of your truck.
Mine has a GVWR of 6500. That’s loaded. Adding another couple thousand before you even start loading! Makes me wonder. I would like to hitch up to one to give it a try

Ram 1/2 ton truck
its not so much as the truck not having the power to pull a 5th wheel, it will pull it just fine but the issue is the transmission will not take it, even though it has the trailer "package" don't be fooled by that, it may be take it for a few trips but not long term up some good hills

So you're saying that his brand new 2017 trucks tranny will burn up after a couple 6% grade pulls?
Wow, thats the silliest thing I've read in a long time.

Well my DW and I have been camping since 1977 from popups to a class A and now back to a 2017 Jayco Eagle HT 27.5 RLTS. It is only her and I and our three Labs. The shower is hugh and the layout is great for us. I tow ours with a 2016 Ford F150 5.0L extended cab pickup without any issues at all. (I had the truck before we bought the 5er).
