I have a new to me 1997 30' Newmar American Star with 2 slides. So far I have had no issues but Murphy is waiting. How can I operate the slides manually in case of failure?

Ad, I too know that Murphy waits for us all. Have you contacted Newmar to check for a possible downloadable version of the owners manual?
If they can't help, I could scan/ send you a copy of my instructions re the slides, but I'm not sure that the MH systems are the same as the 5ths.
Good Luck. repost here if you need more help.

I don't know if the procedure is the same but MY owners manual has 2 scenario's depending if you have Shaft end-mounted motor or Shaft center mounted motor. You basically have to release the Trans-Torque bushing coupling and then PUSH the slide-out in.

The e-mail link from the forum won't let me attach a file. I sent you an e-mail anyway.

Thanks for the responses. I have visited the Newmar Co web site several times and so far haven't found the manuals for this older unit. Copies of any similiar manual pages that address the slide mechanism would be appreciated. . It appears that I have an end shaft drive. The shaft passes thru two sort of cog drive wheels that rotate and push a perforated track on the under-floor of the slide. I haven’t opened the cover or shield at the drive end yet

I am very pleased with my 5'ver. All systems work and it's dry except for 2 minor tree branch/roof fights. I have had the usual minor fixes (faucets/lights). I did replace the amp hungry incandescent ceiling lights with CFL fixtures. We have traveled several 800 miles trips (WA to CA) and numerous shorter trips and 3 years have really enjoyed it. As a card carrying ROF (Retired Old Fart) I have much more time than money so I tend towards DIY.

This forum is a daily read and I have picked up much good information.

Just e-mailed the instructions to you. I would call Newmar and ask if they have any owner manuals for your coach. Looking at the Newmar website, owners manuals are available back to the 1999 American Star (probably not much difference from yours). It is a downloadable .pdf file (102 pages) about 8MB

Thank you K-Star! I also contacted Newmar and they emailed me the 1999 manual and it's very much the same. The instructions for the slide are there and I will open the cover soon to make sure I have tools aboard that will allow recovery from Murphy. I went to the site and was able to drill down and find the manuals and brochures,

Thanks again.
