5th Wheel Cover Question Please

Hello out there,
I'm new to this forum and we have just purchased a 2011 Palomino Sabre, 34ft 5th wheel. I was trying to locate any posts about the best quality of covers so I would not be repeating a post that was already on here (that tends to irritate people a little), anyway, all I could find were postings on the best way to put a cover on.

We plan to build a carport later on but that will have to wait for our budget to recover a little bit so I'm looking for a cover that will stand up to the harsh West Texas wind and sun for at least a while. I have been looking into Calmark but the price tag is over a $1000 and while I might be willing to do that, I would like some input from experienced RVers first.

Thanks for any help

I used a cheap farm tarp for years to cover our 5er. I added over twice the number of grommets to the tarp and used elastic cords (bungee type) to hold it firmly in place. The sun rotted the tarp about every 4 years and had to be replaced, at a cost of $70 for a 20'x60' yellow tarp from a farm store. I never discovered any wear or rubbed places from wind moving the tarp, but I live in the hill country of Indiana in a valley. Wind is not a big issue for me.

Consider using a type of housewrap product like "Tyvek". This allows any moisture to go through from the inside out and allows breatheability for your unit. I have not researched or looked too much at covers but there may be one out there already that is breathable and that is what I would look for in a cover.
Cheers, welcome aboard, Paul

I would only use triple-layer polypropylene on my rig, unwanted moisture can get trapped against the vehicle’s finish and promote discoloration of any gel-coat, or plastic graphics. The one you are looking at for a $1,000 is probably made with this material. The question you must ask yourself is how often will you want to get into your rig to pack or do minor maintenance? I ask this because I think you might get frustrated having to remove and reinstall your cover every time you want to get inside your rig. With this economy you should be able to find reasonable inside storage in your location. Good Luck

Peterson Industries recommended a Tyvek cover for my new Winslow.

I purchased a Calmark cover and am very happy with it. It is nice to look out my window and watch the water roll off the cover. The cover is custom made for my fifth wheel. There is a zipper opening over the door. I can roll and tie up that part of the cover for easy access to the trailer. The zippers are large and easy to use. The cover has elastic on the front and back ends for a snug fit under the trailer and there are numerous grommets to attach bungee cords for securely fastening the cover down. I especially like the fact that when I do get into the coach it is still easy to see as plenty of light comes through. It was expensive, but I think worth it to protect the gel coat.
