I 5th wheeled for over 11 years and never once had a problem with the hitch un-latching or me forgetting to lock it. I got stuck once and when I un-hitched to get a straighter angle, the rear of my truck rose up out of the hole I dug and the pin caught the top of my 5th wheel tailgate. I blame that on my "buddy", who walked away when I was stying to get un-stuck.

I am a very lucky guy. I have a brother in law who is a metal fabricator and a son who is a CNC machinist. This past winter my brother in law developed this trailer saver on my hitch. It works very well. He welded some pieces of pipe under the hitch plate for support of the hitch saver pin. The pin is 1 1/8 inch in diameter. I had to try it after we installed it.
I am very comfortable that it will save my truck box sides.

I can't quite see how it works. What catches the pin if it comes out of the hitch?

After reading the above post last week I called Butch. I recieved and installed mine just yesterday evening. Hoping never to need it, but now I have it. It took about 20 minutes to install and the only issue I had was that one of the nuts provided was the wrong size causing me to dig through my "spare parts" and find one. Great product for the price. -Glenn

Man, I can't wait for him to get the one for the Curt Q20 ready. He has been working on it for a few months now. As soon as he say's it's a go, I'll be putting in my order.

I installed Butch's bar for the Reese 20K. All went well, except the small drill bit supplied was really dull. Used one of mine and the job went easily.

Installed on our Reese 20K this past weekend. All went well! The only concern is the added weight causes the hitch head to tilt back fully. It ends up at a 60 degree angle and made hitching more difficult. Am looking into a way to balance or hold the head closer to level. It is possible that the pin may tilt the head towards level and hitch ok. Any opinions?

You'll be fine. Whenever you un-hitch, only raise the trailer plate about an inch off the hitch. The next time you load, the plate will tilt the head as the pin gets closer to the catch.

With it at 60, there is less chance of it clunking when driving without the 5er hooked up.

I don't want to be a spoil sport but I just talked with B&W, they said this would probably void the warranty. Anyone else know anything more.

B&W can always make policy as they want to, but having had 2 of their Companion hitches, I can't see how you could ever have an issue with their hitch--built very well.
If you ever high-hitch and drop the trailer, that bed-saver is worth a lot more than the hitch is.
