5th Wheel Lube

What do you use to lube your 5th wheel? Or do you use the nylon sliders?

I have used grease for about 14 years, but just recently picked up a lube plate. The only problem with grease is it does get messy, but that was all I used way back when I drove big trucks.

I finally got tired of the mess of greasing the fifth wheel hitch and getting grease on my shirts while stooping under the overhang. I cleaned all the grease away and began to use the lube plate. It worked great for many thousands of miles. No mess!

Teflon plate/B&W Companion for 9 years, never a problem----except, it fell off the pin once and I ran it metal-metal for a little while before I figured it out. No permanent damage, luckily.

I also use the Teflon plate for the King Pin and hitch top plate interface. Although I still grease the king pin and hitch jaws interface with wheel bearing grease. This too me will prevent wear on the jaws and kin pin.

My hitch and kingpin don't rotate on each other, so no lube or lube plate...I have a Demco Autoslide.

HUH, I'm having trouble visualizing how this works. The kingpin doesn't rotate in the hitch?

It is an qutoslide, so the hitch head has some plates on it that capture the kingpin head and they rotate together in order to make the hitch move back and forth...have a look at this video. Navigate about half way down and click on the 'video' tab, then click on the picture of the video...its just a couple minutes long.

My hitch and kingpin don't rotate on each other. I have what's known as the revolution kingpin. There is a wedge that attaches just behind the kingpin that fits the wedge of the truck hitch, the hitch kingpin cannot rotate. Rotation takes place under the nose of the 5th wheel 22" behind the kingpin. This type of pinbox comes stock on the Rockwood we have. The revolution is also known as or is about the same as the the sidewinder hitch sold on E-Trailer.
