5th Wheel Tires

Put about 1500 miles on the fifth wheel so far and can say not a mile went by that I was not thinking about the tires. This week I am going to change them out with one of the following:

Michelin XPS LT235/85R16Q E1

or

Goodyear G614 LT235/85R16 126 G

Thoughts???

My first thought is why? How old are the tires?

Mainec, Good move to replace tires with new, brand name tires. While you are at it, have shop check spring bushings; on new trailers, these are cheap plastic sleeves that wear quickly and when worn can wear out a tire in a few hundred miles. Replace with heavy duty shackles, bronze bushings and wet bolts (Dexter sells a kit) or Never Fail bushings from Lippert. Enjoy the fiver; we had a 30' National SeaBreeze bought new in '98 (long time ago!), just traded for a 2005 40' DP w/tag axle.

We just bought a new 2016 5th wheel, and I'm going to replace the "china bombs" with Maxxis tires this week. I am a little limited due to 15" wheels, but I haven't seen anything bad about Maxxis. And my tire guy has nothing but good things to say about them. I guess the original tires would do ok for short trips to the lake, but we tend to go 2000+ miles at a time to visit family. Also going from D to E rated, just for the 10 ply vs 8 ply. NO I won't need the 80 psi for the load, nor will I go past the PSI limits of the alloy wheels. (which I Love !!!) Monkey

What tires are on your Columbus now? Are they the Westlake ST235/85R16 129/125L tire? The reason I am asking is that these tires are not you typical China made tire. These tires have replaced the Goodyear tires that were available on the Cedar Creek units before, but Goodyear lower the tire rating on their tires, so Forest River has step up the tire game on their products. By installing a 14 PLY G rated tire that seems to have had very few if any issues with the tire. This also has a speed rating of 75MPH on the tire.

I put over 8,000 miles on my set this year with no issues at all. I am going to run them for the year 2016 camping season.

Depending on your axle weights the Michelin XPS Rips may not be sufficient in load capacity for the trailer.

Your Palomino has a GVWR of 16,189#

Michelin XPS are under rated (3043# @80 PSI)

You need a 'G' rated tire at minimum

Goodyear G614s (3749# @110 PSI)
OR
Sailun S637s (4,080# @110 PSI)

Yes I have the Westlake tires. They are only 2 months old. I just heard so much talk about China bombs I was going to change them. If these tires are satisfactory then am going to hold off for a year or two.

The XPS are the best tires that you can buy. And I think that you're spot on to throw the factory tires away... However, before you drop major money on the XPS, check out the Sailun tires - they weigh 100% more than your factory tires, don't cost as much as the XPS and have a great reputation...

Michelin XPS Ribsand Bridgestone R-250 E load range at 3042 lb capacity both are a commercial grade all steel ply carcass tire and tops for 6k axles and smaller.
I doubt these tires have enough load capacity for your 16k+ GVWR trailer unless its a triaxle unit.

For 7k axles the Goodyear G614 RST G load and the Sailun S637 and the Hercules H-901 are very popular with commercial haulers and RV folks. Their also a all steel ply carcass commercial grade tire. These tires have 3750 lb and 4008 lb capacity.

Just realized that I have 235-80-16s. Any issue you guys see with going to 235-85-16s? I just set up the appt to get G614s installed Friday.

Will your 5er rims handle 110lbs PSI? If not then you can't put the G614s on.

Your Westlake ST 235/80/16 are only 80 psi...so wheels are probably only 80 psi.
Those Westlakes are rated for 3520# at 80 psi which is why mfg. can get away with 'E' rated tires

The Michelin XPS/Bridgestone R-250s are only 3042# so would be under-rated for weight on axles


Your OEM rims could be rated higher......doubt it the way MFGs are.
Would only know for sure when you have a tire removed and check wheel data in valley of rim------unless info stamped on backside (sometimes)

You can get Sailun is 235/80-R16. Again - just do a search for these tires and read the feedback.

You need two things to consider moving from 235/80 to 235/85 - first is that the book diameter is about 1" different. You need to have appropriate deck-to-top-of-tire clearance and enough space between the tires.

As mentioned above - you also need two other things:
1) Wheels that will support 110psi and are ABOVE the max load of your tire.
2) New high pressure valve stems.
