7 pin plug maintinance
Getting ready to tow from N.Y. to Fla. the end of the week, hooked up today as a test, & everything works fine. My question is, when the 7 pin plug isn't going to be used for an extended period of time, 3 months or longer, should anything be sprayed in the male or female end as maintinance? Contact cleaner?, WD40? Leave well enough alone? The female end of the plug is in the bed, as well as on the bumper.

John,
contact cleaner will not protect the plug. I regularly spray Metal Protector (Amsoil) on my trailer plugs and never had any problems (even after ten years!)

WD40 is not a lubricant nor a protectant, it is a water-displacing formula. It turn gummy when it dries, is flammable when wet. I just spray the plugs with a penetrating oil before use, connect/disconnect a few times and they make a good connection. I do keep the plugs covered when unused, to keep out mud dabbers, spiders, etc..

I use a contact cleaner with lubricant that I buy from Radio Shack to spray my plug and jack. The cleaner cleans the contacts and the lubricant protects them for a while. You should use this on a regular basis. It's expensive, about $12 for a small spray can, but I haven't found any other source around here. If you have a wholesale electronics supplier near you they should have this product. Good luck & God bless!

Thanks to all who responded. It was 12 degrees here this morning. Getting everything set to point the rig towards the warm sun. Now I know what needs to be done to the plug.

John, you might want to edit your signature or folks are going to think you're playing with toys, what with a 24 inch MH and a 34 inch Montana (LOL) Weathers a little cool right now here in FLA, but back to the mid to upper 70's by the weekend.

With my m/h plug I put a thick layer of grease around the cap, when shut seems to keep the water and stuff out of the plug. plus when I checked the m/h plug and removed the rubber cap over the wires I cleaned all the wires and put silicone over all the wires and replaced the rubber cap over the wires, helps to keep the water from doing any damage. this is what I did
