89 Terry Resort Landing Gear Issue

I was taking 5th wheel to have some welding done. After hooking up 5th wheel to truck, I raised the front landing gear legs. The passenger leg raised normally, while the driver's side leg didn't.

Does anyone know if the leg can be repaired, or, will I have to replace the whole landing gear setup as a whole?

Thanks,

Rich

Since driver didn't raise, I'd pull it apart and see if just a pin sheard.

Thanks for chiming in, I'm going to take the leg apart and see if it can be put back together, or, if parts are broken.

Do you have an tips on how to proceed?

Should I disconnect the motor, or, disconnect the shaft that connects the two legs together?

Thanks,

Rich

The motor, shaft, and gear box come off the leg before taking the leg off.

I've finally found a round 'tuit' and dismantled the landing gear today. This is what I found.

Just by looking at it, it seems to me that the nut that threads onto the worm gear bolt has stripped.
Is there a trick to remove the nut from where it's seated in the leg?

Thanks,

Rich

With an acetylene torch or plasma cutter it looks like, haha! How much is a new leg? Can you buy them individually? I had an issue with mine being stuck and blowing fuses but I dumped 1/2 quart of motor oil down each one. Made a hell of a mess but they work again for now. Not sure what caused it and they don't appear at all serviceable. Grease would be better but I didn't see any way to deliver it or even know what was inside these things really. I assume this is the middle inner leg portion? How does one remove this, does it just unscrew completely with no stopper if you hook the trailer to the truck and park it over a hole and run it out?

not a lot of working room if you were to hook it to the truck and disassemble from inside the storage compartment, plus I don't want it stuck on my truck for 2 weeks if I gotta order parts once I tear into it and find an issue, what did you do? Thanks

Went back outside and tried prying nut out of bracket with no luck. It does look like the only way to replace it is a grinder or torch, and then, weld the bracket back after replacing nut. I'll have to figure out how much this process would be to see if it is cheaper to pay the welder that's been doing work for me, or, purchase another leg. Gonna check out a local RV Recycle business tomorrow to see if they have the landing gear leg or nut.

Yes it is. It's the unpainted part in the picture below.

Post 4 above is how I got the landing gear leg removed.

If 5er hooked to truck when issue with landing gear happens, make sure you have a jack and tools.

Just an Update

Stopped by local RV Recycle shop about a week ago. I brought the lead landing gear leg assembly for comparison. They had many different landing gear legs, so I chose one that was somewhat simillar in body style. The outer dimensions of the inner leg was exactly the same as the one I brought, so I purchased it.

It is a few inches shorter than the original one, but, I think that it will extend far enough to make contact to the ground when disconnecting 5er from truck.

I installed the inner leg to the lead leg and the worm gear engaged the nut. There didn't seem to be any slop so I think it is going to work out. I ran the inner leg all the way up the worm gear. At the top, the worm gear just spun with no resistance. I only ran it a couple of turns and then lowered the inner leg. I made a mark on the outside of the inner leg with a sharpie about 4-5" from the bottom so that when I stow the legs up, I will stop way before I can bottom out the inner leg on the worm gear.

Before I reinstall the landing gear to the 5er, I'm going to remove the rust and repaint.

Running it up or down too far is what strips that nut I do believe. The shop tech giving me the grand tour when I bought mine said never do that. I drew a line on my inner leg and I don't retract it past the point when the line touches the outer leg.

Edit. Nevermind, you're on top of it, I got all excited when I read that you ran it up and kept going and I stopped reading to share this tidbit, haha
