Accordion style shades

I'm tired of these pleated style shades breaking all the time. I'm going to replace the cord and do away with the day part of the shades and just use the night part. What I'm wondering is, can the day part be placed directly behind the night part to make them darker, or will that just make them harder to pull up and down since they will be heavier? Has anyone ever done this before or is there a better way to make them darker?

If I were you, I'd switch to roller shades. They aren't cheap but are so much better than the accordion style that so many RV's come with. On MCD's website you can order direct. MCD Innovations

Sorry this doesn't answer your question but just wanted to mention the option.

There are several manufactures who make these roller shades. When we were looking for a new 5er this was one of my DW requirements. Our Cedar Creek came standard with a day/night roller shade and we love them.

Here is a link to another manufacture. Day/Night Roller Shades | The Dicor Corporation | Official Website

There maybe other out there to.

Fully agree. Replacing the accordion shades with their constantly breaking strings with MCDs was the single best mod we made to our rig. If you're competent with a tape measure and basic tools, you are probably able to install them yourselves.

Well I replaced all of the strings in our shades and while I was at it I removed the day shade part of them. They work so much easier now and I don't think there is as much strain on the strings which should help them to last longer. I still want to replace them eventually with the roller shades but with the expense I'll have to do them a few at a time.

I guess we've been lucky in that in the last two rigs we've had the day night shades and never broke one. The last rig we had to 13 years and they still were working just fine although I did have a couple of the bottom spools break, the cords never did.
I was pricing out the Automotion or MCD shades but we decided to trade rigs which was FAR more expensive!
